Soak Up Summer Reading Series -Pete the Cat, Rocking in My School Shoes

Blog

I can’t believe it’s the final week of my Soak Up Summer Reading Series! I am so excited to introduce you to April from the blog, A Modern Teacher.  April creates amazing resources for moms and teachers including planners, management tools and so much more.

Today, April is sharing this darling Pete the Cat book, along with a creative craft and treat idea! Such a perfect way to celebrate the start of the school year with your kiddos! I love that we are ending this series with Pete the Cat, one of my all-time favorites!  Enjoy everyone!

Oh, Pete the Cat! How we love you! I am typically not a “cat person” but who could not resist this not-so-common cat! I mean, his cool demeanor can calm anyone down. Since the first day of school is right around the corner, we chose to read “Pete the Cat, Rocking in My School Shoes”. (which you can find HERE–note, there are affiliate links in post). I love, love, love this “oldie but goodie” book. Here’s why:

  • It goes through the different areas of the school, exposing kids to have some background on what to expect.
  • The book is repetitive, providing lots of reading opportunities for my kids, who are beginning readers.
  • We have the book on CD, which I highly recommend because it sings the song he sings and my kids love to dance to it too!
  • The idea is…well, I won’t spoil it, but Pete models how to act while at school (and life in general). Which is concrete and good for my kids. Everyone comes to school with shoes, so everyone can relate, which makes the book inclusive. Love, love, love!
  • And Pete is just plain cool.

After reading the book and dancing to our heart’s content, we decided to make guitars and a fun snack: microphones to sing our hearts out! Because who doesn’t want to “rock out” before school starts? We are a dancing family so this was perfect for us.

At first, we made guitars from cardboard boxes we had from our big move. I cut them out, which was totally doable.

You can always use paper if you don’t have boxes. You can search the guitar coloring page on google and all sorts of guitars will come up. We created the guitar on paper first, glued down the paper on cardboard, then cut out.

Then, we decided to make the guitars last longer so we cut them from wood. Now, I understand you might not have a saw. So, the cardboard will work (and so will paper too). The kids will love decorating their own, personal guitar.

What do you think?

After our little dance party, we ate a “micro-fun” dessert (because I love desserts and that is about all I can make-ha!). Did you get it? “Micro-fun?” …I’m pretty corny…sorry. Yes, little microphones so they can belt their heart out too!

This was a simple dessert to make because I am all about that. Simple. I don’t have time for anything else. So, I used ice cream cones, white cupcakes (bought at the store), and sprinkles. I put the white cupcakes into the ice cream cones, rounded out the icing on top just a little bit and then sprinkled with silver sprinkles. That’s it. Super easy and super fun!
